As mentioned before one of the first things I started doing after becoming a new proud owner of a Nokia e61, was looking for an application which would allow me to use Skype on my mobile (not only chatting but also making phone calls). Clearly Skype did not develop a solution for the Symbian platform yet. The only applications I found available were kind of hybrid solutions, eg using a combination of client and desktop software with the desktop software “hacking into Skypeâ€, moreover, with most of these solutions still a decent phone call could not be made.
Only in a later stage I realized that Nokia decided already to make the e61 VoIP (“Voice over Internet Protocolâ€) enabled. Wow, great news, but no clue on how to set it up. That brings me to this post as (based upon several emails I received) for a lot of Nokia e61 enthusiasts it is still unclear on how it works, and especially on how to set the “thing†up.
And … “I can understand whyâ€. I do believe that Nokia’s target for the design team must have been : “make VoIP as difficult as possible to set-up, then at least we can explain to Vodafone they do not have to worryâ€. BTW. Vodafone or any other of the big operators should be worried.
Ok here it goes …
Â
Let me start by stating I am not a VoIP expert, but at least I know in the meantime how to set it up. Before explaining the steps, a few comments,
- It seems most users (simply) assume that VoIP as a service is provided by their current (mobile) operator. In most cases this will not be true. As reflected already above, VoIP providers basically go head-to-head in terms of competition with the conventional operators. (and that is why it is difficult for mobile makers like Nokia to introduce VoIP on the hardware)
- VoIP phone calls will be in most cases a cheap replacement compared to normal calls. However, as some readers asked, VoIP can hardly be used over GPRS. Moreover, please realize that due to data transmission a call with GPRS and / or 3G might end up much more expense than simply calling in the conventional way.
- Making a “VoIP†call with the Nokia e61 is done through selecting “internet call†instead of “voice callâ€.

Steps to take :
- Sign-up with a VoIP server provider (this can basically be any – many are offered on the internet – personally I use VoIPTalk.org (a UK based provide)
- Get the VoIP settings from the provider
- Set-up your Nokia e61 with the VoIP settings
- Register your phone (preferably over WiFi) and start making a call
Sign-up with a VoIP server provider
In the meantime there are many. Basically you should select one on the basis of : 1) where you are located yourself, 2) do you make a lot of international calls (yes / no), 3) where is the service provider located (this will determine for example the phone number you can register allowing people to call you on your VoIP connection). All these elements together will basically determine the “cost of your callsâ€. I myself used VoiPTalk.org, however, I did not really spend energy yet in finding the cheapest provider possible as such I cannot really vouch that this will be the cheapest one. Signing up for any service will give you an ID [VoipTalk ID] and password [VoiPTalk password]. These you will need later in setting up your phone. One of the advantages of VoIPTalk is that you can use a fixed IP configuring your VoIP device. As such you no longer have to worry about port forwarding or NAT traversal.
Get the VoIP settings from the provider
Although I did not have this luxury when I subscribed to VoIPTalk, they now have a great and detailed instruction manual fully tuned towards the Nokia e61. In this instruction manual all necessary settings are provided.
Set-up your Nokia e61 with the VoIP settings
Simply follow the instruction manual as above. Basically when you set-up your phone you need to make three steps : 1) make sure you have set-up a WiFi connection to the internet, 2) set-up your SIP settings under the connection-menu (use the connection from 1)), and 3) link the internet telephone settings to the SIP settings.
Note. Please carefully watch the port of the proxy server : should be set (=changed) to 5065. Registration should be : when needed. And security should be : No. And although in the instruction manual transportation type is set to UDP I have it set to TCP.
Register your phone (preferably over WiFi) and start making a call
After the tedious exercise of setting it up you should not be in a position to make your first VoIP call.
Note. That when your phone is registering to the service it might fail the first time, just try it a 2nd time.
Hope the above helps to resolve most of the questions around VoIP and making phone calls with the Nokia e61 VoIP set-up.
Another article on VoIP has been posted earlier on e-series.org. In this article other VoIP providers are suggested / described.

ive been using truphone and its great.. and free calls to us and canada till dec.. quality of call is good..but let me warn u all..it does drain battery..
Just a couple of things to add to this:
1) there was a pretty good walk through in the latest (Dec) issue of PC Pro on how to set this up with an E61
2) you will need to open both port 5060 and 5065 on your firewall to get it to work. This will be ok for your router at home but unless you are managing your own firewall at work this will prevent you from using the service.
Hi,
this is an easy way of setting up the Nokia E61 for making cheap international calls..VOIP using SIP.
Terrasip is what I use for it gives me an amazing rate of 0,055 € (~3,170 INR) per minute !! You have to use their super discount Call India tariff. They have similar tariffs for various countries too !
Here is how to configure your Nokia e61\e60 :
Go to Tools - Settings - Connection -SIP settings - Create the
following profile
Profile Name: terrasip
Service Profile: IETF
Default Access point: (your WLAN AP name)
Public user name: your SIP number@terrasip.net
Use Compression: No
Registration: †Always â€
Use Security: No
Proxy Server: 193.47.84.4
Realm: 193.47.84.4
User Name: your terrasip SIP number
Password: [Your Terrasip password]
Allow loose routing: Yes
Transport Type: UDP
Port: 5060
Registrar Server: 193.47.84.4
Realm: 193.47.84.4
User Name: your terrasip SIP number
Password: [Your terrasip password]
Transport Type: UDP
Port: 5060
Then go to connection - Internet Tel. Settings -
Create a new profile for “terrasipâ€, name it “terrasipâ€
In Connectivity - Internet tel. - Preferred profile - Choose “Terrasipâ€
Voila you are done. You should see the internet phone icon over at the right corner of the phone.
enjoy…!
by the way..this is at present the cheapest way I could find for making internet calls to India.
Various airports have free hotspots, eg Changi airport and you can use these hotspots { WiFi) to connect to the net and call home to India.
Sudhir,
Where and how do I sign up for super discount india tarrif??
Easiest way to get the E61 ready for VoIP calls and use their service for free is www.challengermobile.com. You can also have super discount rates on call back worldwide to your mobile through their service www.one4000.com
i want use skype in India. Please let me know how to do settings.
thank u.
Does anyone know if the Voip settings work for the e62 as well? It doesn’t support WIFI… sad…
Should be I guess. However, without WiFi it is not very usefull as GPRS is too slow and 3G might be too expensive (pending on the package you have).
Did you try fring? It works as a skype client. It can de downoaded from http://www.fring.com. Rafa.
Thanks for your step-by-step instructions on how to set up VoIP telephony on a cell phone. How’s it working out for you?

I remember when Nokia was the top cell phone company around 10 years ago in the U.S. Hopefully with the VOIP feature they will come back up=) http://connect-point-to-point.com
Yes - Nokias now using VOIP is great, hopefully they’ll start selling the phones in he US with SIP enabled instead of having to buy them outside the US. I used http://gsmcall.com/pages/mobile/mobile-voip.html where they give you step-by-step directions for setting up your Nokia SIP phone. Use it and make cheap voip calls. ENJOY
just need it only
