So far the only Skype solutions I have tried require that simultaneously you have to run your laptop / PC to enable your Nokia e61 connecting to the Skype servers. Obviously not a very attractive service. Already some time ago I went over to fring.com and concluded (without trying) that their solution had the same problem. This time I actually tried it as with version v3.0 fring claims it provides (other) VoIP services being integrated in their solution.
Installing fring was a nice and unique experience. Really thought through. You have to provide your mobile pone number wherever you live and fring will provide you with a download link. Keep your fring internet site running as you are taken step by step through installation as the site keeps track of where you are in the installation process. This is the way I guess it should always be done.
After going through all steps, you have to provide a userid and password to your own liking and you are ready to go. Basically four services are offerred: MSN, Google talk, Skype and SIP. Disadvantage is that you can only choose one SIP service at a time.
For the rest the installation works like a swift. For Skype you enter your userid and password, same for MSN and for your SIP provider you use the designated settings. I got both VoIPCheap and VoIPTalk working. Google talk I do not use and as such I did not try.
After keying-in all userids and passwords you are ready to try. I was actually doing all of this late at night so I did not have many laboratory rabbits to try it on other than a few. Anyway, Skype chatting worked fine although slow. Skype calling went not so good as the line was quite unclear. SIP worked quite ok but as Skype the lines were not very clear (does not compare to directly using SIP on the Nokia e61).
All in all it seems to work but net yet flawless; probably the guys at fring need a significant hardware upgrade to improve speed and quality.
Disadvantage I have noticed is that the whole application is still a bit immature. For example fring while running in the background takes control over some keys which because of that do not work anymore for some other applications, eg in ProfiMail the send / update (=green) key stopped working.

I agree with you over the sound quality issue.
Fring works well with MSN, Google Talk and Skype. As it shows all of the contacts together sending messages is fairly simple as well.
I’ve found it handy when you’re expecting a call on Skype, and don’t want to be tied to the PC. The ability to wait for the Skype call and answer it anywhere is more than handy.
Steve.
Also try www.iskoot.com and www.barablu.com - they offer really good solutions too
Just installed it, gonna give it a go.
I just downloaded Fring and setup skype. I made the test call successfully, but when I try to make a skypeout call, it automatically terminates. I am using my wifi capability to make these calls.
What am I doing wrong?

I have tested iSkoot and it works really smooth on E50 and E61i. There is another paid service called IM+ for Skype by Shape Services but I found it to be an unstable application.
