[..] I wrote a small program, called LogExport, to Export the Call Register data to a CSV file. It only does that thing, no more and no less. You will only find one menu: Export, the analysis task can be done by a spreadsheet. I was actually planning to give analysis options, but after reading so many subscription plans from different providers [..]

This is actually a really simple but nice application. With this simple appl you can download all the phone’s log information to a *.csv file which then can be used for analysis purposes in Excel. All detail in terms of calls in/out and messages in/out is made available.

Really convenient if you have some trust issues with your lady as even when SMSs or calls are deleted from the phone they will still remain in the log. The best way to learn your loved one is unfaithful? Buy her a Nokia e61, install this appl (explain that this appl is needed to make the “internal antenna work”) and download the *.csv once or twice a month.

Good luck - and … do not blaim me …

Recently I have come across the following problem : when I download a *.sis or *.sisx file directly on my e61 it will not install anymore. Basically the file is recognized as a NotePad file and opened as such on the device. I do not recall I have made any changes to the settings of the phone, thus to me the only conclusion can be that this is a result of the firmware upgrade. For sure it worked properly in the past.

Would appreciate if anyone can comment whether they have the same problem, and if so, what the solution is for it.

In follow-up of the earlier post on Morange - FREE push mail I like to come back on some issues raised by some users.

First of all when you are logged in on the Morange portal you can customize the download of the client application. Eg like me I am not using the web cam application or the PIM synchronization application. If you exclude them on the download page then the Morange client download will also exclude these. The advantage is that it will save you navigation in the application on the phone itself.

As mentioned before one of the first things I started doing after becoming a new proud owner of a Nokia e61, was looking for an application which would allow me to use Skype on my mobile (not only chatting but also making phone calls). Clearly Skype did not develop a solution for the Symbian platform yet. The only applications I found available were kind of hybrid solutions, eg using a combination of client and desktop software with the desktop software “hacking into Skype”, moreover, with most of these solutions still a decent phone call could not be made.

Only in a later stage I realized that Nokia decided already to make the e61 VoIP (“Voice over Internet Protocol”) enabled. Wow, great news, but no clue on how to set it up. That brings me to this post as (based upon several emails I received) for a lot of Nokia e61 enthusiasts it is still unclear on how it works, and especially on how to set the “thing” up.

And … “I can understand why”. I do believe that Nokia’s target for the design team must have been : “make VoIP as difficult as possible to set-up, then at least we can explain to Vodafone they do not have to worry”. BTW. Vodafone or any other of the big operators should be worried.

Ok here it goes …

Since I have bought my e61 I have tried many and many more different themes. The one which I have used longest so far is probably S60 white. Disadvantage was that this theme was not optimized for the e61. As a result I missed parts in my screen of which I was not even aware. In fact I have stopped using some software because ‘fields were missing’. Other themes I have used most of the times have a ‘too busy’ or a ‘too dark’ set-up. Making it hard to read, or reducing contrast. Thus I decided to create my own theme.

Looking for the tools to do so, it was a bit disappointing. In fact I did not come a lot further than ThemeStudio 3.0, a slow and tedious way of making any theme. Moreover not yet optimized for s60 3rd edition. Happy I then was to learn that Nokia came up with Carbide.ui v3.1 (btw. you need to become member of the Nokia forum to be able to download). Still not easy to learn, but after some trial and error with some standard themes that come with it, I started to create my first own theme keeping the ‘too busy’ and ‘not enough contrast’ in mind. I have been using ProfiMail already for quite some time, also on other phones. In there is a color theme I really like for the reasons mentioned. As such I tried to create a similar look and feel in my first theme.

Let me know what you think.

If you like it, then you can download it here. (Btw. it is nice and small)

As mentioned before, I have never created a blog in my life before. Thus using Wordpress was a new learning experience for me. The brilliant thing is that Wordpress also allows you to create new messages straight from your Nokia e61, or any other email enabled device.

Steps to take are as follows :

  1. Create a new email address only known to you, and only used for posting new messages
  2. Under options in Wordpress : add your email account information which will allow Wordpress ‘to pick up new messages in this email box’
  3. Install the plug-in ‘WP-cron‘ on your web hosting server (somewhere in the plug-in directory)
  4. Activate the WP-cron and WP-cron mail plug-ins (you can test the WP-cron plug-in by activating the automated email sending plug-in)
  5. You are ready to go.

Note. one disadvantage : the plug-in is only activated (picks up a new message) when your blog is visited (through internet or RSS). Other disadvantages are : you can only deliver text, no HTML code and it is hard to layout your text in a decent manner

Nokia mobile phones always have been sensitive in terms of ‘auto dialing’. A story of a friend of mine is exam plenary. It was a warm summer night and (let us for this story call him Michael) Michael was visiting one of his customers (actually Nokia) for business in Finland. Being abroad, he earlier that evening made a call to his wife for the daily check-up. He learned she was staying with her mother. It was the last phone call he made that evening before he went together with the Nokia purchasing guys into town.

For those who have been in Helsinki know this city has a lot to offer for a group of guys looking for some entertainment. Later that evening after visiting a number of bars the group decided to go to a night club. Having a shallow conversation with one of the lightly dressed ladies of the house, Michael receives a call … from his wife. Reason for calling : she just hang up Michael after listening in on the entire conversation which just went on. She listened in together with her mother. Apparently, his mobile started to auto dial the ‘last phone number in memory’. The phone was triggered after he took a comfortable position at a sofa next to his hostess of the evening.

Thus the first thing to check with any candy bar phone is how to lock the key path. Being a new proud owner of the e61 I quickly found the small ‘mlock‘ application and with the above story in mind, I installed it. The first installed application on my new phone. I used the the standby screen set-up to make a short-cut from the left select button. The same button needed to unlock the e61 again. To me a logical place to put it.
